ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Skip Rohde was an officer in the U.S. Navy for over 22 years. After retiring in 1999, he went back to school and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, graduating in 2003.
Rohde has studied art in a number of venues since grade school. During his first undergraduate college career, he studied fine art at Memphis State University. He learned lithography and etching at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, where he was awarded first prize in lithography at the annual juried student show in 1986. He studied etching with Gary Hansmann and Lily Rosa at Gallerie Cujas, San Diego, California, in 1991-92. He also studied painting at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, between 1994-95.
Most of Rohde's works are paintings, but he also works in printmaking and photography. His works in all three media have been critically acclaimed. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries across the Southeast. He has had multiple solo exhibits in universities and art spaces in North Carolina and Tennessee. His photography was recognized in the prestigious "Photo National 2005" at the Lancaster Museum of Art and the "Small Print Exhibition" at the Camera Club of New York.
Rohde maintains a studio in Asheville's historic River District. While still producing his own art, he teaches classes in the College for Seniors at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Additionally, he is the courtroom artist for WLOS-TV in Asheville, and for three years was the President of the River District Artists. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors of the Asheville Area Arts Council.
Rohde is currently on sabbatical from his studio. He is working for the U.S. State Department in Baghdad on Iraqi reconstruction projects. He will return to Asheville in August, 2009, and resume working as an artist.
